Waterfalls and Elephants [Pala-U, Thailand]

September 14, 2011 § Leave a comment

So it’s officially been a week and a day since we’ve been back in the US from Thailand.  I wanted to share these photos before we left but things at work got crazy and trying to pack everything up and get our affairs in order before we left took priority.  So now I feel behind in blogging (more muay thai photos and some sky shots are coming).

Somebody’s Grandmother — Thailand

June 27, 2011 § 2 Comments

Riding around the other day after work on a beautiful afternoon, not particularly looking for photos, but I brought my camera anyway.  I’ve seen this woman sitting before; near our house there is a small mountain, you can drive over the mountain, which is kind of a shortcut to another side of town, when you get to the other side there is a small row of little shacks [houses].  There is a young woman cooking, a man repairing motorbikes, and this woman sitting and chatting, and a lot of street dogs.  The last time I saw this woman I didn’t have my camera with me [noob].  I stopped the motorbike and chatted for a minute in Thai (until the short list of things I can say/respond to is spent) and asked her if I could take her picture, Thai people almost always say yes…  She straightened up a bit, and stared right at me.  It was cool, and I’m fairly happy with the way the photo turned out, I’ll go back.

Kanchanaburi, Thailand

February 26, 2011 § Leave a comment

So, Kanchanaburi, Thailand.  We spent a weekend in this provence with some friends, it was the first time going back there since our OEG orientation.  The hostel we stayed at was a really nice, awesome little set of bungalows on stilts in a marsh… perfect setting.  The town of Kanchanaburi its self has an awesome feel; a small, laid back little town, that relies on tourism, but stills feels a bit like it’s off the beaten path.  A beautiful place either way.  The one full day we had, we rented motorbikes and drove about 50km north in the provence to Erawan Falls, pretty beautiful falls.  They were huge.  Plus it was freakin hot and the water felt awesome.

In an effort to continue my portraits of Thai people, I tried to slip a few ‘faces’ into this one… « Read the rest of this entry »

These two photos are from a recent trip to Hua Hin (again).

Okay I have to say as a side note, the reason why we (my girlfriend and I) have been making so many trips down to Hua Hin – and as a result why all my photos as of late have been from there – is because we are being offered a job at a new teaching position down there (also I keep saying down there because it’s south from us, and about a 5-6 hour journey from the town that we currently live in).  So needless to say we’ve been journeying down yonder in order to hash out and finalize this job situation, and to find  place to live down there, and just to hang out with friends cause we like it there (duh, we’re moving there).  It’s an awesome, quiet, sleepy little beach town that’s a blast to hang out in.  And you can actually find stuff to do pretty readily available, unlike our current town, there’s some stuff here you just got to search a bit harder to find it.  But I think in the long run I’m going to be much happier with the teaching position, and feel more at home in Hua Hin.

Muay Thai

February 9, 2011 § 2 Comments

These photos are from a combination of two different nights and four different muay thai matches during two different weekends down in Hua Hin.

The first of which being two 11-year-old kids fighting each other.  The second is two random Thai fighters I didn’t know, but they had a really good fight.  The last two fights pictured – basically the reason we went to the matches in the first place – are of our friend Meow (black shorts).  Apparently Meow doesn’t fight much anymore (he’s considered old for muay thai), but he’s a goog trainer, so it’s exciting to watch his matches.  All the of the fighters do this traditional dance before they fight, which is apparently supposed to be the perfect warm-up/stretch for the activity they’re about to partake in (wailing on each other).

Left, is one of the 11-year-old boys doing his warm-up just before the match.

Land of Smiles

January 19, 2011 § 3 Comments

I’ve been wanting to do a post like this since coming to Thailand, a series of faces that represent Thai people, however my collection of ‘faces’ is mediocre at best.  But as far as people shots go, I think this is the best of what I’ve got so far…

I think I’ll keep this post going, or at least maybe a new category.  My goal was to have more photos of ‘people in Thailand’, people representing the “Land of Smiles”, so all the Thais call it, but I think I’m failing.  So these are photos that make me smile. I’ve been lazy with my camera in thailand, and I’m blaming it on lack of inspiration.  People are my favorite thing to photograph, I like surprising them in a quick snapshot.  Most of the time I think the look is “why is this crazy white person taking my picture??”
Here they are; stay tuned for more, perhaps I have found an inspiration…

Left: The kid was unhappy about something, then mom spotted me and stopped to pose.
